Part 8: The Prophesy

52. INT. BEAVERS’ LODGE - NIGHT
In the dining area, the Pevensies set the table.

Beaver brings over TWO MUGS FILLED WITH BEER

MR. BEAVER
They’ll have taken him to the Witch’s house. And you know what they say...there’s a few who go through them gates that come out again

Lucy looks up worried.

Mrs. Beaver shoves her husband aside and lays down a plate of FISH AND WOOD CUTTINGS.

MRS. BEAVER
Fish and chips

Lucy scrunches her nose. Mrs. Beaver shoots her husband a glare.

MRS. BEAVER (cont’d)
(admonishing)
But there is hope, dear. Lots of hope

MR. BEAVER
Oh yeah, there’s a right bit more than hope.

Beaver leans forward.

MR. BEAVER (cont’d)
(whispering)
Aslan is on the move.

Peter, Susan, and Lucy stare, strangely calmed.

EDMUND
Who’s Aslan?

Beaver stares, then breaks into a chuckle.

MR. BEAVER
Ha! "Who’s Aslan?" You cheeky little blighter...

Mrs. Beaver pokes him.

MR. BEAVER (cont’d)
What?

He looks up to see four very confused faces.

Mrs. Beaver pokes him with a ladle. He looks up to see four very confused faces.

MR. BEAVER (cont’d)
You don’t know do you?

PETER
Well, we haven’t exactly been here very long-

MR. BEAVER
He’s only the King of the whole wood. The top geezer, the real King of Narnia!

MRS. BEAVER
He’s been away for a long while.

MR. BEAVER
But he just got back and he’s waiting for you near the Stone Table.

Susan and Peter look at each other, confused. Lucy smiles.

LUCY
He’s waiting for us?

MR. BEAVER
You’re blooming joking!
(to his wife)
They don’t even know about the Prophecy!

MRS. BEAVER
Well, then...

She takes him by the shoulders and forces him into a chair. Beaver looks at their confused faces and...sighs.

MR. BEAVER
Look. Aslan’s return, Tumnus’ arrest, the secret police... it’s all happening because of you.

SUSAN
You’re blaming us?

MRS. BEAVER
No. Not blaming. Thanking you.

The Pevensies stare, confused. Beaver sighs.

MR. BEAVER
There’s a prophecy. "When Adam’s flesh and Adam’s bone,
Sits at Cair Paravel in throne,
The evil time with will be over and done."

SUSAN
You know that doesn’t really rhyme.

MR. BEAVER
(impatient)
Yeah! I know it don’t. But you’re kind of missing the point!

MRS. BEAVER
It has long been foretold that two Sons of Adam and two Daughters of Eve will defeat the White Witch, and restore peace to Narnia.

The children look at each other, dumbfounded.

PETER
And you think we’re the ones?

The Beavers nod, smiling.

MR. BEAVER
You’d better be. Cuz’ Aslan’s already fittin’ up your army.

LUCY
Our army?

Peter seems intrigued, but Susan shoots him an alarmed look.

SUSAN
Mum sent us away so we wouldn’t get caught up in a war.

Peter turns to the Beavers, regretful.

PETER
I think you’ve made a mistake. We’re not heroes.

SUSAN
We’re from Finchley.

Susan stands from the table.

SUSAN (cont’d)
Look, thank you for your hospitality.
(looks at Peter)
But we really have to go.

MR. BEAVER
You can’t just leave!

LUCY
He’s right. We have to help Mr. Tumnus.

Peter stands.

PETER
It’s out of our hands
(to the Beavers)
I’m sorry but it’s time the four of us were getting home.

He turns to see EDMUND’S EMPTY CHAIR.

PETER (cont’d)
Ed? Ed?

Peter searches the room. THE FRONT DOOR STANDS AJAR.

PETER (cont’d)
I’m going to kill him.

Beaver looks concerned.

MR. BEAVER
You may not have to.

The three remaining Pevensies turn to Beaver.

MR. BEAVER (cont’d)
Has Edmund ever been to Narnia before?

The three children look at each other, concerned.

53. EXT. WINTER FOREST - NIGHT
Minus his coat, Edmund pulls his collar against the wind as he heads determinedly for the two hills.

54. EXT. WINTER FOREST - MOMENTS LATER
Peter races desperately after his brother. Susan, Lucy and Mr. Beaver try to keep up.

PETER
Hurry

55 EXT. CASTLE LAKE - NIGHT
Edmund leans against a boulder, panting. He stares up.

The clouds part and the moon reveals the WHITE WITCH’S CASTLE, an icy fortress atop an island amidst a frozen lake.

A cold wind pulls at him. He looks back, almost regretful.

But the wind PUSHES HIM FORWARD TOWARD THE CASTLE.

56 EXT. CASTLE HILL - NIGHT
Peter roars up the slope and skids to a stop. His BROTHER’S FOOTPRINTS HEAD ACROSS THE FROZEN LAKE.

Susan and Lucy watch EDMUND CLIMB toward the CASTLE’S GATES

LUCY
Edmund!

MR. BEAVER
Shhh! They’ll hear you!

Peter heads toward the castle. Beaver GRABS HIM.

MR. BEAVER (cont’d)
NO!

PETER
(struggling)
Get off me!

MR. BEAVER
You’re playing into her hands.

SUSAN
We can’t just let him go.

LUCY
He’s our brother

MR. BEAVER
He’s the bait.
(this stops them)
The Witch wants all four of you!

PETER
Why?

MR. BEAVER
To stop the prophecy from coming true. TO KILL YOU!

They look up helplessly as...Edmund reaches THE OPEN GATE. Taking a backward glance, he walks through, VANISHING.

Susan wheels on Peter.

SUSAN
This is all your fault.

PETER
My fault?

SUSAN
None of this would’ve happened if you’d listened to me in the first place.

PETER
Oh, so you knew this would happen?

SUSAN
I didn’t know what would happen, which is why we should’ve left while we sill could.

LUCY
Stop it! This isn’t going to help Edmund!

Beaver stares gravely.

MR. BEAVER
She’s right. Only Aslan can help your brother now.

PETER
Then take us to him.
