Part 4: Mr. Tumnus’ House

23 EXT. NARNIA, TUMNUS’ HOUSE - DAY
A pair of footprints, faun and human, wind THROUGH THE WOODS, DOWN A SLOPE AND ACROSS A PLAIN.

Lucy holds Tumnus’ arm as they make their way through A TALL ROCK CANYON. She gapes at the world around her.

Tumnus leads her AROUND A CORNER TO...A LITTLE ROCK HOUSE.

MR. TUMNUS
Here we are. Come along. After you.

Lucy grins, charmed.

24 INT. MISTER TUMNUS’ HOUSE - DAY
Lucy snoops around Mr. Tumnus cozy living room. Books and knickknacks crowd the shelves: "IS MAN A MYTH?," "HUMANS: THE UNTOLD STORY."

Something catches her eye. She picks up a painting of an older, grey-haired faun.

She studies his kind face...

MR. TUMNUS (O.S.)
That’s my father.

TUMNUS COMES THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR, carrying firewood.

LUCY
He has a nice face. He looks a lot like you.

When Lucy isn’t looking, Tumnus turns and LOCKS THE DOOR BEHIND HIM, removing the key.

MR. TUMNUS
No. I’m not very much like him at all really.

LUCY
My father’s fighting in the War.

Tumnus takes the picture.

MR. TUMNUS
My father went away to war, too.

Lucy looks up at his sad face. He sees her concern and quickly pastes on a smile.

MR. TUMNUS (cont’d)
But that was a long time ago. Before this dreadful winter.

Tumnus lays the picture down FACE DOWN and goes to the kitchen.

Lucy adds the logs to the fire. She sits down, her STOCKINGED FEET dangle above the ground.

LUCY
Winter’s not all bad. There’s ice skating, and snowball fights. And Christmas!

Tumnus comes back in carrying the tea tray, laying down tea, toast, and sardines.

MR. TUMNUS
Not here. No, we haven’t had a Christmas for a hundred years.

LUCY
What? No presents for a hundred years.

MR. TUMNUS
Always winter, never Christmas. It’s been a long winter.
(he smiles, covering)
But you would have loved Narnia in the summer.

Tumnus pours the tea and reminisces.

MR. TUMNUS (cont’d)
We fauns danced with the dryads all night, and we never got tired. And the music? Ah such music...

Tumnus turns to her.

MR. TUMNUS (cont’d)
Would you like to hear some now?

LUCY
Yes, please.

Tumnus opens a box on the table beside him and produces...A STRANGE LITTLE PAN PIPE.

MR. TUMNUS
Now, are you familiar with any Narnian lullabies?

LUCY
Sorry, no.

He raises the flute to his lips.

MR. TUMNUS
That’s good, because this probably won’t sound anything like one.

Tumnus plays A LILTING MELODY. Lucy listens, staring into the fire, slipping her tea.

She blinks, startle. IN THE FLAMES, she sees...A HERD OF GALLOPING CENTAURS.

She starts. Tumnus smiles reassuringly and goes on playing.

Lucy peers back into the fire: NYMPHS dance in a clearing. DWARFS feast at a table. A FLYING HORSE takes to the air.

Tumnus watches as Lucy sinks into her chair, her EYELIDS DROOPING. He plays on until she slumps, ASLEEP.

He stares at her innocent face. His eyes move slowly away, down to the fire...AND THEN GO WIDE.

IN THE FLAMES, A MASSIVE LION ROARS.

Tumnus jumps back, shocked.

THE FIRE GOES OUT.

Lucy’s eyes flutter open. She yawns and looks up at the window. It’s dark outside. She jumps to her feet.

LUCY
(gasps)
I should go.

Tumnus looks at her, trembling.

MR. TUMNUS
It’s too late for that now.

HE TEARS UP. LUCY LOOKS CONCERNED.

MR. TUMUS (cont’d)
I’m such a terrible faun.

LUCY Oh, no. You’re the nicest faun I’ve every met.

Tumnus stops. He smiles at her sadly.

MR. TUMNUS
Then I’m afraid you’re had a very poor sampling.

Lucy hands him HER HANDKERCHIEF to wipe his eyes.

LUCY
You can’t have done anything that bad.

MR. TUMNUS
It’s not something I have done, Lucy Pevensie. It’s something I am doing.

Lucy turns white. Suddenly scared.

LUCY
What are you doing?

Tumnus can barely whisper it:

MR. TUMNUS
I’m kidnapping you.

Lucy backs up, frightened.

MR. TUMNUS (cont’d)
The White Witch - she’s the one who makes it always winter, always cold, she gave orders...

Tumnus dabs at his eyes.

MR. TUMNUS (cont’d)
If any of us ever find a human wandering in the woods, we’re supposed to turn it over to her.

LUCY
But Mr. Tumnus...you wouldn’t...

Tumnus stares down at the handkerchief. He looks up at Lucy. Her little face trembles.

LUCY (cont’d)
I thought you were my friend.

SUDDENLY, DETERMINATION FILLS HIS EYES.

25 EXT. NARNIA, FOREST, ROCKY AREA - NIGHT
Tumnus and Lucy crash through the snow, destroying their old footprints as they race from his house.

MR. TUMNUS
She may already know you’re here. The Woods are full of her spies.
(he whispers)
Even some of trees are on her side.

Lucy cranes her neck at a grove of ominous pines.

26. EXT. NARNIA, LANTERN WASTE - NIGHT
At the lamp-post, Tumnus looks into Lucy’s eyes.

MR. TUMNUS
Can you find your way back from here?

Lucy peers, seeing the light from the wardrobe.

LUCY
I think so.

She grabs Tumnus’ hand, worried.

LUCY (cont’d)
Will you be all right?

He breaks down, blowing his nose loudly. Doing his best to compose himself, he offers Lucy back her handkerchief.

TUMNUS I’m sorry..
.I’m so sorry

Lucy pushes the handkerchief back, smiling gently.

LUCY
Keep it, you need it more that I do.

MR. TUMNUS
No matter what happens, Lucy Pevensie, I am glad to have met you. You’ve made me feel warmer than I’ve felt in a hundred years.

Lucy smiles.

MR. TUMNUS (cont’d)
Now go!

Tumnus watches as Lucy races away, waving one last time.

27 INT. PROFESSOR’S HOUSE, WARDROBE ROOM - DAY
Lucy tumbles out of the wardrobe. Light fills the warm room.

PETER (O.S.)
Ninety-nine, one hundred. Ready or not, here I come!

28 INT. PROFESSOR’S HOUSE, UPPER HALL - DAY
Lucy throws open the wardrobe room door.

LUCY
It’s all right! I’m back! I’m all right!

Edmund pokes his head out from behind the curtain.

EDMUND
Shut up. He’s coming.

Peter rounds the corner at the end of the hall.

PETER
You know, I’m not sure you two have quite got the idea of this game.

LUCY
Weren’t you wondering where I was?

EDMUND
That’s the point. That’s why he was "seeking" you.

SUSAN
Does this mean I win?

PETER
I don’t think Lucy wants to play anymore.

LUCY
I’ve been gone for hours.

Her brothers and sister exchange puzzled looks.
