14 EXT. PROFESSOR’S HOUSE - DUSK
THE PROFESSOR’S HOUSE looms through the trees. The children stare up from the rattling buggy.

MRS. MACREADY (O.S.)
Professor Kirke is not accustomed to having children in this house.

15 INT. PROFESSOR’S HOUSE - DUSK
The children are astonished at the enormous ornate entrance.

MRS. MACREADY (O.S.)
And as such there are a few rules we need to follow. There will be no shouting or running...

Mrs. Macready leads the children up a grand staircase.

MRS. MACREADY (cont’d)
No improper use of the dumb-waiter.

Susan reaches out to touch a porcelain bust.

MRS. MACREADY (cont’d)
No touching of the historical artifacts.
And above all...

They stop by a CLOSED DOOR. Light flickers behind it.

MRS. MACREADY (cont’d)
(whispering)
There shall be no disturbing of the Professor.

Peter, Susan, and Edmund follow Mrs. Macready down the hall. Lucy lingers behind.

Suddenly, A SHADOW MOVES UNDER THE DOOR. Lucy dashes away.

17 INT. PROFESSOR’S HOUSE, GIRLS’ BEDROOM - NIGHT
A RAIDO sits on a dresser. Peter look out into the night, listening.

RADIO ANNOUNCER
German aircraft carried out a number of attacks on Great Britain last night. The raids, which lasted for several hours-

Susan turns the radio off. Peter spins, annoyed. She nods toward Lucy.

Lucy huddles under the blankets, clearly upset by the news.

LUCY
The sheets feel scratchy.

Peter and Susan share a knowing look.

SUSAN
Wars don’t last forever, Lucy.
We’ll be home soon.

EDMUND (O.S.)
If home’s still there.

Edmund stands in the doorway, holding a toothbrush.

SUSAN
Isn’t time you were in bed?

EDMUND
Yes, Mum.

PETER
(growling)
Ed...

Lucy’s lip quivers. Peter glares at Edmund then turns to Lucy.

PETER (cont’d)
You saw outside. This place is huge. We can do whatever we want here.

Susan forces a tight smile. Edmund just stares at the floor.

PETER (cont’d)
(a bit hollow)
Tomorrow’s going to be great.
Really.

18 INT. PROFESSOR’S HOUSE, SITTING ROOM - DAY
Lucy stares sadly as RAIN PELTS DOWN on the leaded window.

SUSAN (O.S.)
GASTROVASCULAR.

Susan stands at a table before a HUGE DICTIONARY.

SUSAN (cont’d)
Come on, Peter. Gastrovascular.

Peter slumps in a chair, incredibly bored.

PETER
Is it Latin?

SUSAN
Yes.

Edmund’s legs stick out from under the coffee table.

EDMUND
Is it Latin for "worst game ever invented"?

Susan shuts the dictionary with a thump.

Lucy turns from the window.

LUCY
We could play hide and seek.

PETER
But we’re already having so much fun!

Edmund laughs. Susan scowls at both of them.

LUCY
Come on, Peter, please? Pretty please?

Peter looks tiredly into her pleading face. He sighs.

PETER
One. Two. Three. Four...

EDMUND
What?

They all run for cover while Peter counts.

19 INT. PROFESSOR’S HOUSE, MISC. ROOMS-DAY
Lucy dashes round a corner, in time to see...Susan lowering herself into the WINDOW SEAT, her finger to her lips.

PETER (O.S.)
Thirty. Thirty-one.

Lucy jumps behind a potted fern, but she shows right through.

PETER (O.S.) (cont’d)
Fifty-six. Fifty-seven.

She yanks back a velvet curtain to find...Edmund.

EDMUND
I was here first.

PETER (O.S.) (cont’d)
Eighty-eight. Eight-nine.

Lucy makes a face at Edmund and runs frantically away.

She runs around the maze-like hall to a CLOSED DOOR.

PETER (O.S.) (cont’d)
Ninety.

Lucy throws open the door and runs in.
