Part 10: Across the Melting River

70 INT. WITCH’S CASTLE, DUNGEON - DAWN
CLOSE ON: A CHAIN. We follow it up to Edmund as he tries to eat a piece of stale bread, but gags.

TUMNUS (O.S.)
If you’re not going to eat that...

Edmund looks up, startled. There in the shadows lies...MR. TUMNUS, gaunt, beaten, his hooves shackled to the floor.

MR. TUMNUS
I’d get up, but my legs-

Edmund stares, realizing.

EDMUND
Mr. Tumnus...?

MR. TUMNUS
What’s left of him.

He peers at Edmund

MR. TUMNUS (cont’d)
You’re Lucy Pevensie’s brother.

EDMUND
I’m Edmund.

MR. TUMNUS
You have the same nose.

Edmund unwittingly scratches his nose.

MR. TUMNUS (cont’d)
Is your sister all right? Is she safe?

Suddenly, WOLF HOWLS CUT THROUGH THE NIGHT.

Edmund looks away, trouble.

EDMUND
I don’t know.

THE LOCK CLANGS. THE WITCH STRIDES IN WITH GINARRBRIK.

WHITE WITCH
My police tore that dam apart...

Edmund goes white.

WHITE WITCH (cont’d)
Your little family are nowhere to be found.

Edmund breathes again, relieved.

THE WITCH LIFTS EDMUND FROM THE FLOOR.

WHITE WITCH (cont’d)
Where did they go?

EDMUND
I...I don’t know.

WHITE WITCH
Then you are of no further use to me.

She raises her wand. Edmund whimpers.

EDMUND
Wait. The Beaver said something about...Aslan?

THE WITCH’S EYES FREEZE. She drops Edmund to the floor.

WHITE WITCH
Aslan? Where?

EDMUND
I-

TUMNUS LEAPS TO HIS FEET, INTERRUPTING.

MR. TUMNUS
He’s a stranger here, your Majesty. He can’t be expected to know anything!

The Witch glares at Tumnus. Ginarrbrik knocks the faun back. She turns to Edmund.

WHITE WITCH
I said, where is Aslan?

Tumnus shoots Edmund a desperate look. Edmund stares at him for a long moment, then...

EDMUND
I don’t know. I left before they said anything. I wanted to see you.

WHITE WITCH
GUARD!

AN OGRE SLAMS OPEN THE DOOR, STANDING AT ATTENTION.

The Witch purses her lips.

WHITE WITCH (cont’d)
Release the faun.

The Ogre drags Tumnus out.

WHITE WITCH (cont’d)
Do you know why you’re here, faun?

He tries to straighten up proudly.

MR. TUMNUS
Because I believe in a free Narnia.

WHITE WITCH
You’re here because he turned you in. For sweeties.

Tumnus looks at Edmund, confused.

WHITE WITCH (cont’d)
Take him upstairs. And ready my sleigh. Edmund misses his family.

The Witch gives Edmund one last contemptuous smile...then turns on her heel and walks out.

Leaving Edmund in misery.

75 EXT. ROCK BRIDGE - MORNING
Lucy, Susan and Peter squint into the sun.

VAST, OPEN SPACE SPREADS OUT FOR MILES. FROZEN AND WHITE.

Beaver points out over the intimidating vista to a small gray slab in the distance.

MR. BEAVER
Now, Aslan’s camp is near the Stone Table, just across the frozen River.

PETER
River?

MRS. BEAVER
Oh, the river’s been frozen solid for a hundred years.

PETER
It’s so far.

MRS. BEAVER
It’s the world, dear. Did you expect it to be small?

SUSAN
Smaller.

73 EXT. WITCH’S CASTLE, COURTYARD - DAWN
Edmund looks up at the statues he saw on the way in.

His face goes cold. There, illuminated by the cold dawn lights stands...

MR. TUMNUS. A STONE STATUE, FROZEN IN PAIN.

Edmund stares, his spirit broken.

THE WHITE WITCH, stands tall and formidable in her sleigh

WHITE WITCH
When you are ready, son of Adam

74 EXT. WITCH’S CASTLE - DAWN
THE WITCH’S SLEIGH RACES OUT OF THE CASTLE

The Witch sits tall in the rear, her robes snapping behind her. At her feet, Edmund cowers.

Ginarrbrik cracks his wildly.

Track with them as the peel off into the forest.

77 EXT. FROZEN LAKE - DAY
FIVE TINY FIGURES make their way over a landscape of white.

Mr. Beaver looks around nervously.

MR. BEAVER
C’mon humans! While we’re still young!

The Beavers gallop easily over the snowy plain. The Pevensies lag behind, their legs bogging down in the snow.

Peter stops to pick up Lucy who’s dragging behind.

PETER
If he tells us to hurry one more time, I’m going to turn him into a big fluffy hat.

Lucy giggles. Beaver stops and listens. SLEIGH BELLS.

MR. BEAVER
Hurry up! Come on!

Out in the snow, the children sigh.

LUCY
He is getting a little bossy.

Mrs. Beaver jumps up and down.

MRS. BEAVER
No! BEHIND YOU! IT’S HER!

MR. BEAVER
Run! Run!

The children turn:

In the distance...A ROOSTERTAIL OF SNOW PLUMES AS A SPEEDING SLEIGH BEARS DOWN ON THEM.

Peter grabs Lucy and runs for shore.

Susan slips on the ice, scrambling.

Atop the sleigh, A TALL FIGURE stands at the reins.

They reach the edge of the lake.

Beaver leads them into the woods. He points to a small hole in the rocks.

MR. BEAVER (cont’d)
Inside! Dive! Dive!

The children throw themselves into the hole.

78 INT. SHUDDERING WOOD, HOLE - DAY
Beavers and humans lie crammed in a tiny hole, trembling as the SLEIGH BELLS GROW LOUDER.

Finally, with a hiss of runners, THE SLEIGH STOPS RIGHT ABOVE THEM.

A shadow passes over the mouth of the hole.

They wait. Finally,

LUCY
Maybe she's gone.

Peter looks at his sisters, huddled together in fear.

He swallows and tentatively gets to his feet.

PETER
I suppose I'll go look.

MR. BEAVER
No.

Beaver pushes him back down. Peter hides his relief.

MR. BEAVER (cont´d)
You're worth nothing to Narnia dead.

Mrs. Beaver reaches for him.

MRS. BEAVER
Neither are you, Beaver.

MR. BEAVER
Thanks sweetheart

He squeezes her hand, then slips into the light.

Mrs. Beaver comforts the frightened Lucy. Everyone waits.

And then...MR. BEAVER'S HEAD POPS INTO THE HOLE FROM ABOVE, scaring the daylights out of them.

MR. BEAVER (cont´d)
Come out! Come out! I hope you've all been good because there's someone here to see you.

79 EXT. FROZEN LAKE, BANK - DAY
Lucy peeks out of the hole.

EIGHT REINDEER REST IN FRONT OF AN ANCIENT SLEIGH.

And there stands...A TALL MAN IN A BRIGHT RED ROBE AND A GREAT WHITE BEARD.

Lucy GRINS.

LUCY
Merry Christmas, sir.

FATHER CHRISTMAS smiles and shakes her hand.

FATHER CHRISTMAS
It certainly is, Lucy. Since you have arrived.

Susan stares at the man in the red suit, dumbstruck.

SUSAN (fed up)
Look, I've put up with a lot since I got here, but this-

Peter steps in front of her.

PETER
We thought you were the witch.

FATHER CHRISTMAS
Yes...Sorry about that.

He looks back at the sleigh.

FATHER CHRISTMAS
But in my defense, I've been driving one of these longer than the witch.

SUSAN I thought there was no Christmas in Narnia.

FATHER CHRISTMAS
Not for a long time. But the hope you have brought, your Majesties, is finally starting to weakening the witch's power. Still...

HE PULLS A SACK FROM HIS SLEIGH.

FATHER CHRISTMAS
I dare say, you could do with these...

LUCY
Presents!

Father Christmas crouches, giving Lucy a small JEWELED VIAL.

FATHER CHRISTMAS
The juice of the fire-flower. One drop will cure any injury. And, though I hope you never have to use it...

He hand her a TINY DAGGER. Lucy weighs it in her hand.

LUCY
Thank you, sir. But I think I can be brave enough.

FATHER CHRISTMAS
I'm sure you could. But battles are ugly affairs.

The old man turns to Susan.

FATHER CHRISTMAS (cont´d)
Susan, trust in this bow and it will not easily miss...

She tentatively takes a BOW and QUIVER OF ARROWS.

SUSAN
What happened to "battles are ugly affairs"?

FATHER CHRISTMAS (chuckles)
And though you don't seem to have a problem making yourself heard...

Father Christmas winks. He gives her an IVORY HORN.

FATHER CHRISTMAS (cont´d)
Blow on this, and wherever you are, help will come.

She looks down at the beautifully carved horn. She softens:

SUSAN
Thanks.

He gives Peter A SWORD AND SCABBARD and a SHIELD, emblazoned with a lion.

FATHER CHRISTMAS
Peter, the time to use these may be near at hand.

Peter draws the sword.

PETER (reverent)
Thank you, sir.

FATHER CHRISTMAS (to all of them)
These are tools, not toys. Bear them well and wisely.

Father Christmas climbs into his sleigh.

FATHER CHRISTMAS (cont´d)
Now, I must be off. Winter is nearly over and things do pile up when you've been gone a hundred years. (Cracking the reins) Long live Aslan! And Merry Christmas!

The sleigh shoots off across the ice to a chorus of "Thank You" and "Merry Christmas".

Lucy looks at Susan.

LUCY
I told you he was real.

Peter stands silent, suddenly serious.

PETER
He said winter was almost over...

Peter stares at his sisters.

PETER (cont´d)
You know what that means? No more ice.

80 OMITTED

A81 EXT. NARNIA, FOREST
Peter, Susan, Lucy and the beavers race through Narnia forest.

B81 EXT. NARNIA, FOREST
Maugrim and the wolves run in pursuit.

81 EXT. GREAT RIVER, CLIFF - DAY
Cracks run along the frozen surface of THE GREAT RIVER. Dark green water shoots underneath.

The group stands on a precipice.

PETER
We need to cross. Now.

TO THEIR LEFT, A MASSIVE FROZEN WATERFALL looms, huge chunks of ice cracking off.

LUCY
Don't beavers make dams?

Beaver stares down at the disintegrating ice.

MR. BEAVER
I'm not that fast, dear.

Peter's eyes flick from shore to shore, calculating.

SUSAN
Wait, will you just think about this for a minute-

PETER
We don't have a minute.

SUSAN
I'm just trying to be realistic.

PETER
No, you're trying to be smart, as usual.

Peter scrambles down the hill. Lucy and the beavers follow.

Susan hesitates. Then, a distant HOWL cuts through the air. She quickly follows.

82 EXT. FROZEN LAKE, BANK - DAY
MAUGRIM steps out of the shadows, sniffing FOOTPRINTS.

More wolves prowl out behind him.

83 EXT. GREAT RIVER - Day
PETER'S BEATEN BROWN SHOE steps onto the ice. It cracks.

Beaver and Peter exchange a concerned look.

MR. BEAVER
Wait. Maybe I should go first.

PETER
Maybe you should.

Peter moves aside as Beaver slowly leads them onto the surface of the river.

THE ICE GROANS OMINOUSLY. Mrs. Beaver looks at her husband.

MRS. BEAVER
You've been sneaking second helpings, haven't you?

MR. BEAVER
Well, you never know which meal is going to be your last. (especially with your cooking)

Lucy grips Peter's hand. Susan glares at her brother.

SUSAN
If mum knew what we were doing...

PETER
Mum's not here.

A CRACK RIPS OPEN behind them. Icy water sprays.

84 EXT. GREAT RIVER, CLIFFS - DAY
Far below, FIVE TINY FIGURES slip across the ice.

Maugrim and his pack prowl onto the cliff. He looks from the children below to the WATERFALL above.

85 EXT. GREAT RIVER - DAY
Peter trails Beaver.

Suddenly, A HUGE ICE CHUNK PLUMMETS from the waterfall, SMASHING THROUGH to the water below.

They all look up to see

A PAIR OF WOLVES picking their way across the waterfall.

LUCY
Oh, no.

PETER
Run!

Peter grabs Lucy and dashes for the opposite shore, but...

MAUGRIM AND VARDAN DROP DOWN DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THEM.

Peter slips to a stop, TRAPPED.

The wolves tear across the ice.

Peter pushes Lucy behind him and AWKWARDLY DRAWS HIS SWORD.

Beaver rushes to join him, but...

VARDAN PEELS AWAY AND KNOCKS HIM DOWN.

MRS. BEAVER
No!

MAUGRIM CORNERS PETER, EYEING THE BOY'S SHAKY SWORD.

MAUGRIM
Put the sword down, boy. Someone could get hurt.

MR. BEAVER
Don't worry about me. Run him through.

Peter's numb hand squeezes the sword hilt.

MAUGRIM
Leave now while you can, and your brother leaves with you.

Peter jabs ineffectively at the wolf.

SUSAN
Stop, Peter. Maybe we should listen to him.

MAUGRIM
Smart girl.

MR. BEAVER
Don't listen to him. Kill him! Kill him now!

THE ICE CRACKS BEHIND THEM. SUSAN JUMPS to avoid the advancing water.

MAUGRIM
Oh come on, this isn't your war. All my Queen wants is for you to take your family and go.

Peter pokes tentatively with his sword, scared.

SUSAN
Look, just because some man in a red coat hands you a sword it doesn't make you a hero! Just drop it!

MR. BEAVER
No, Peter! Narnia needs you. Gut him while you still have a chance!

Vardan clamps down on Beaver's neck.

Maugrim smiles at Peter's predicament.

MAUGRIM
What's it gonna be son of Adam? I won't wait forever, and neither will the river.

Peter looks back at his faltering sisters...

...at Mrs. Beaver's terrified face...

...at Beaver struggling against Vardan's razor grasp.

LUCY
Peter!!!

Just then, ANOTHER HUGE CHUNK TUMBLES from the waterfall.

The surface of the ice shakes, sending new cracks everywhere. Even Maugrim struggles to stay upright...

Peter turns to see:

FISSURES SPIDER-WEBBING ACROSS THE FALLS' FROZEN SURFACE.

PETER (to Susan)
HOLD ON TO ME!

Susan grabs Peter by the coat, then reaches out for Lucy.

Peter looks at Maugrim, raising his sword into the air...

HE STABS IT DOWN, DRIVING IT INTO THE ICE.

MAUGRIM'S YELLOW EYES GO WIDE.

JUST THEN, THE FROZEN WATERFALL BURSTS. ICE AND WATER SURGE DOWN THE RIVER.

PETER HOLDS TIGHT TO THE SWORD AS THE WATER HITS THEM.

CHILDREN, BEAVERS, WOLVES - ALL WASH AWAY IN A TORRENT

86 EXT. GREAT RIVER, DOWNSTREAM - DAY
An ice chunk bobs in the water,

REVEALING PETER STILL HOLDING ONTO THE SWORD. Susan sputters beside him, desperately hanging on.

PETER PULLS LUCY UP BY HER COAT.

The Beavers swim to the floating berg. They dig their claws into the ice, pushing toward the shore.

87 EXT. RIVER BANK - DAY
The berg bumps into the shore. For a moment, everyone pants, exhausted.

Then Peter looks down to find...

HE'S JUST HOLDING AN EMPTY COAT.

HIS EYES GO WIDE. He scans the fast-moving river, terrified.

Susan jumps to her feet, her face pale white.

SUSAN
What have you done? Lucy? Lucy?

She looks at Peter, an accusation trembling on her lips.

Suddenly, they both hear a COUGHING FROM THE SHORE as

LUCY STUMBLES UP THE BANK.

LUCY
Has anyone seen my coat?

Peter and Susan sag with relief.

MR. BEAVER
Don't you worry dear, your brother's got you well looked after.

Mrs. Beaver smiles at something off screen.

MRS. BEAVER
And I don't think you'll be needing those coats anymore.

A88 EXT. SNOWY CLEARING - DAY
The kids follow their gaze to where

A LUSH CHERRY TREE BURSTS WITH LIVING COLOR in the midst of the frozen white wood.

88 EXT. NARNIA - MISC - DAY
THE COATS HANG DRIPPING FROM A TREE BRANCH.

MONTAGE: THE CHILDREN AND BEAVERS PRESS ON, AS AROUND THEM, NARNIA ERUPTS WITH SPRING.

89 EXT. GREAT RIVER, CLIFF - DAY
THE WITCH standing at the river's edge with Ginarrbrik.

NOT A TRACE OF ICE SHOWS ON THE FLOWING RIVER.

GINARRBRIK
So...warm out.

He starts to remove his coat. The Witch shoots him a look. He puts the coat back on.

GINARRBRIK (cont´d)
I'll...go and check the sleigh.

WOLF (O.S.)
Your Majesty. We found the traitor. He was rallying your enemies near the Shuddering Woods.

The Witch turns to see the wolves arriving with Fox.

The Witch smiles.

WHITE WITCH
Ah, Nice of you to drop in. You were so helpful to my wolves last night. Perhaps you can help me now.

The fox looks around nervously. Then he turns his eyes to... EDMUND.

FOX Forgive me, your Majesty.

WHITE WITCH
Don't waste my time with flattery-

The fox turns to her, summonsing up all his bravery.

FOX Not to seem rude, but I wasn't actually talking to you.

He turns to Edmund.

The Witch grows dangerously angry.

WHITE WITCH
Where are the humans headed?

THE FOX TREMBLES, BUT GRITS HIS TEETH DEFIANTLY.

THE SATYR'S LOOK NERVOUSLY AT EACH OTHER>

THE WITCH RAISES HER WAND TO STRIKE.

EDMUND
WAIT! No. DON'T!

EDMUND JUMPS FORWARD. HE STARES AT THE FOX.

EDMUND (cont´d)
The Beaver said something about the Stone Table. That Aslan had an army there.

Fox drops his head. The Witch smiles.

WHITE WITCH
Thank you Edmund.

She takes the wand from Fox's neck.

WHITE WITCH (cont´d)
I'm glad these creatures got to see some honesty...

EDMUND RELAXES A TOUCH

WHITE WITCH (cont´d)
Before they die.

SHE STABS HER WAND INTO THE FOX. MAGIC RADIATES OUTWARD.

EDMUND
NO!

THE SATYR TOUCHING THE FOX TURNS TO STONE. FOX GIVES ONE LAST GROWL, THEN GOES MARBLE.

The other satyr breaks for the woods. The Witch whirls and SLASHES HIM WITH HER WAND, a statue.

Edmund stares shocked. The Witch slaps him across the face.

WHITE WITCH
Think about whose side you're on, Edmund. Mine...

She grabs his face and turns it towards the statues.

WHITE WITCH (cont´d)
Or theirs.

The Witch turns to the wolves, seething.

WHITE WITCH (cont´d)
Go on ahead. Gather the faithful.

The Witch seethes at the burgeoning countryside.

WHITE WITCH (cont´d)
If it's a war Aslan wants...

A BUTTERFLY swoops near her head. She turns it to stone. It lands in the mud with a THUP.

WHITE WITCH (cont´d)
It's a war he shall get.

She stalks ahead on foot.
