He looks a litttle young, but looks perfect otherwise, and don't forget, the book really never mentions if Tumnus is old or not, right? If they were to make him older, theres always makeup!! I've never seen him in anything, but I'm sure he will do greatsmileys/smiley4.gif

I think he definetly looks too yound but, hey, that's what makeup is for!

I won't believe this report until the studio confirms it. I remember reading that Nicole Kidman was confirmed to play the Witch and obviosuly that wasn't true.

Thanks goodness they arn't doing a computer animated Tummnus. Never thought they would but you never know....phew!

I think he looks pretty good for the role, I have never really thought about Tumnus' age, but I think an old and wise faun wouldn't let himself be bossed around by the white witch, at the same time he couldn't be too young either, he did party with a lot of the people in the wood before the winter (I really don't remember, it's been a while, and I haven't any plans for reading again until I've read Gormenghast and Hitchiker's Guide)... maybe his parents were killed or something and he had to live alone, maybe raised by the witch or some of her servants. He is not evil.
...well, I'm not going to ponder on his lifestory smileys/smiley1.gif, I think the actor is a good choice, although I have never heard of him I think...which makes him even better, I like that there are a lot of fairly unknown actors...as long as they are good smileys/smiley1.gif

you guys must live in NZ or englad or sumthin, because i was on here when the news released like 20 min ago, and it says 1:46pm on one of your times, and my time here is 4:12pm.  i live in the US.

I do think he looks young, but he will be good for the role, because he reminds me a little of Elijah Wood, and I thot E.W. Woulda been great for the role.

Well, it is official. I'm excited. We are finally getting news on cast members.  smileys/smiley4.gif

Like everyone else, I pictured him a bit older, but I'm not complaining at all.  It makes more sense somehow him joining the witch's forces at a young age.

I am also going to add that I'm very excited that they are picking relatively unknown people to play these roles.

lI found a picture of James McAvoy from when he was in Children of Dune.  If I can say this without offending anyone, fauns realy should have, well, let's say nearly perfect physiqesmileys/smiley2.gif (sp?)since they are from Greek mythology, and James McAvoy has got it!   I mean, I suppose there could be an ugly, fat old faun, but  I don't think it would be the norm.  And I'm guessing that they look young for a long time since they are so lively and active.  Anyway, from looking at this pivture I can definitly see him as a faun! It was on www.jamesmcavoy.com  Anyone have thoughts to add to this?

P.S. I tried for a long time to upload the picture, but iI couldn't make it work.smileys/smiley19.gif  Sorry!

I'm getting pretty excited about this now.  I think it's an interesting way to go with this character.  I wouldn't have pictured him so young, but if this is who they've cast, I think it'll be pretty cool.  I don't think I've seen him in anything, but if he's a good actor I'm sure it's fine.  I can't wait to see how this turns out.

Nah, Elijah's too short and too famous to take on Tumnus. And prolly has had enough of gallivanting around NZ in funny costumes, weird and remote locations to last him a lifetime. Even a hobbit one.

James McAvoy as Sgt.Bloxham in Lorna Doone. He looked a bit young to me too - but I am not sure if I pictured Mr. Tumnus as older because the book described him that way or because I was influenced by artwork in the narnia books I was reading.

Just so you know - he can be made to look older.  Here's a shot of him I found www.jamesmcavoy.com - at his website from a production he was in called "Lorna Doone".

ROFL!!!! Narnian Mary Sue's....*rolls eyes* Yes, it will
happen. Count on it!!

As to his age, remember, Frodo was supposed to be
alot older than he ended up being in the films due to
Elijah's age. But honestly, I now cannot imagine
Frodo any other way. Could Frodo have been played
by someone older? Probably. But, I for one am glad
they chose Elijah. The age, in the end wasn't really
that important.

I saw him in Children of Dune, and I think he's a really good
actor. He is younger and more attractive than I imagine
Tumnus, but I felt the same way about Elijah Wood as Frodo,
and I think that he did a great job. It's also really reassuring to
me that the two cast members that have been confirmed are
both British and neither of them are terribly well known. Now, if
they could just announce who they've cast as the Pevensies....

Actually, I think there would have been a noticible difference in tone if Frodo had been played by a more middle-aged person, as is in the books.  Different, but not necessarily better.  But that's another discussion.

Oh, dear, you're right, guys.  I suppose we must face the fact of Narnian Mary Sues on the horizon.  Maybe we should start a PPC now (and if anyone got that reference, I commend you).

Yikes and are we gonna now have a rise in fauns

around Ren Faires?

Posted By: RedHead975

smileys/smiley36.giflol...which Ren Faire are you near?  I'm near the one in San Bernardino, CA.  Hobbits and elves have appeared here and there.  But then again, so does old fantasy/medieval looks that stick a bit out at Ren Faires.

Now speaking on Mr. Tumnus...it's true the age factor.  It really doesn't matter in movies such as this.  It's what works the best.  I can't imagine Frodo looking different.  And, as someone else brought up, age in Narnia is anyones game.  We just read the books and make it up in our minds how a character should be, then bring our opinions to this forum.  Which of course makes for interesting reading...smileys/smiley4.gif

I think so too, and when I read the book I still imagine Frodo as
older. I only meant that Elijah Wood managed to get across the
things that were most important about Frodo's character in spite
of the age difference, which I hope James McAvoy will be able
to do with Tumnus.

I would also like to see another Dune actor in this series:  Alec Newman.

I think he (James) is pretty good looking.  The book does describe him as being handsome.  Also, I always imagined him as being fairly young.  The fur on his legs is shiny and black, and he has a little pointy beard.  The description made him seem young.

I really don't think it will be a problem to make him look older, if need be. I'll never forget the first time I saw The Exorcist and someone told me Max von Sydow was only in his thirties. I thought he was about seventy! The make-up job was flawless.

Thranduil, did you really think Elijah Wood was miscast as Frodo? I thought he did quite well; he may not have been exactly as Tolkien wrote the character, but he made the role his own and stamped it with authenticity.

I still maintain that if Adamson wants Tumnus to be older, then McAvoy can be convincingly aged with makeup. After all, it isn't the age of the actor that matters, it's the talent, isn't it?smileys/smiley2.gif

Thranduil, did you really think Elijah Wood was miscast as Frodo? I thought he did quite well;

yes I think so. According to Tolkien Frodo is the oldest and most wise / brave one of the 4 hobbits. In PJ's movie, he's the youngest, he's wimpy and you can never clearly recognize him as leader of the hobbits.
He's not fat, he's more elvish than hobbit-like and after all he's just a boy ;)

...of course one can argue about his acting, but that's more or less a matter of taste, not a matter of casting or miscasting.

well just my two cents, I wouldn't have liked a 19 year old boy as Gimli as well ;)

All references to LOTR asside, ever since my Dad started reading Narnia to me as a child I have always wante Roddy McDowell to play Mr. Tumnus. I thought he would have been perfect for the part at any age.  Unfortunately his passing makes that impossible so Mr. McAvoy is who we get.

My first reaction was the same as many have stated, he's too young!  C.S. Lewis never said how old Mr. Tumnus was, so I suppose that is not really relavent. He was old enough to have a beard and so is Mr. McAvoy.

My second reaction was, he doesn't look like I pictured Mr. Tumnus.  Then I imagined him with the pointy beard and curly black hair and thought, Cool!  I like it!

Posted By: Cade
Date Posted: June 03 2004 at 7:04pm

I have to agree, when I saw James McAvoy's picture I was like "What? He's too young to be Tumnus!!" But he's totally grown on me now, though I did have a moment a week ago where I quite liked the idea of Jake Gyllenhal as Tumnus, but then he's becoming a bit too well known now, so James is fine in my eyes.

Tilda Swinton as the white witch however is casting HEAVEN! Everytime I read about Nicole Kidman I was like "No way she is SO not the white witch" but with Tilda Swinton I was 100% behind it the moment I heard.

Now if they would just announce who they've cast for the four children so we can get that worry out of the way!

I think I'm offically seeing James as Tumnus now. I hope they don't make him older, in the book I always saw him as my older brother's age (I was 8 and he was 18 when I read it the first time) so I hope they let James look his age.

Here's a picture of James from "Shameless" where he has a Tumnus beard going on. http://www.narniaweb.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif Sorry that it's so small.   I run the official James McAvoy fanlisting ( http://james.spiras-fayth.com - http://james.spiras-fayth.com ).  He is an amazing actor.  I would recommend Children of Dune to anyone who might be interested in his other works.  He has a show on BBCA called "State of Play."  I've e-mailed BBCA, begging for repeats.  Episode II has James in it a lot.  I know James will be great in the movie.  I can see him as Tumnus...and yes...I'm a huge fan of the books...have been for longer than I've been a James fan, lol.  I know someone said when they read the books they viewed Tumnus as an older brother, that's kind-of how I viewed the character as well.  Young...really not that old.  Lewis says that he's a middle aged faun when the children return to England at the end of book 2.

Oh yes. I've recently managed to see him in Bright Young Things (which I was hopping about and hoping for earlier in this thread...) as well and, well, he continues to be brilliant, getting one of the best acting sequences in the film. Unfortunately, he's not in it quite as much as I thought he would be.

I want a dvd release of State of Play. It was entertaining, had James in it and also had Philip Glenister. He's a favourite actor of mine.

Ah, so it's you who runs that fanlisting. I'm not a member, but I did look and see if anyone was running one.

I'm with you about State of Play.  When I was in England last summer, I caught two episodes of it.  I think it's just brilliant.  I would buy it in a heartbeat if they released it on dvd.

I can't wait to see Bright Young Things.  I believe it's coming out in the US in August.  I'm anxious to see Stephen Fry's work.

smileys/smiley36.gif Now I see it. Yeah James McAvoy will make a great Mr. Tumnus. Now if they do his makeup right and we can't really recognize his as James McAvoy maybe he can do a dual role and also play the  the Older Peter Pevensie in LB.(I know my imagination is probably running away with me but still......)

I think that McAvoy is a great choise. He's young enouhg (I was afraid that they will cast some old man to that role). LWW Tumnus must be young because he's middle aged not until Pevensies are adults them selves (in HB).

He's not that famous, too. I recon the actors should be not-so-celebrated because the ones with name have usually too much manners or (meanning: they act the same role in every film). This is just my opinion, I've seen him only in "Dune".
